Welcome to Brookford - Scotland's Most Hospitable B&B

Brookford receive Green Tourism Business Scheme Silver Award.

Brookford - Silver GTBS award
From the moment of our decision to open Brookford as a Bed and Breakfast, we were determined that we wanted to minimise our  impact on the beautiful and unspoilt area that is the Glenkens. Whilst we focused on a customer centred approach we were always mindful of building a business that would be as environmentally friendly as it is customer friendly.

In March 2017 we were awarded the highest accolade our industry can bestow, the Visit Scotland Thistle Award for the Most Hospitable B&B in Scotland. Having achieved our goal of providing the very best in Scottish hospitality, we are now concentrating on achieving the highest standards required of Gold status through our membership of The Green Tourism Business Scheme.

Our aim is simply to continue offering the very best visitor experience whilst minimising the impact of all the environmental and ecological elements it takes to maintain those standards.

All our kitchen and laundry appliances have been replaced with A or A+ rated machines. Wherever possible we use eco-friendly laundry and cleaning products and operate a two day towel and three day linen replacement policy. A smart meter allows us to constantly monitor our power use and a daily usage target helps keep us focussed on our usage.

All the lights in the property have been changed, where possible to LED including the exterior lights which have been chosen also for their low light pollution. In the absence of water metering, all our flow rates from taps, toilets and showers have been checked and restricted to optimise the use of the water in the property. As part of our daily housekeeping, we switch off lights when they are not needed, TV’s are turned off and unplug phone & camera chargers, when not required.

In the dining room, our preserves are homemade using our own or locally sourced berries and fruit. All bread is homemade. All our Breakfast menu meats are sourced from within a 40-mile radius of Brookford.

Bees from The Glenkens and Nithsdale help produce the honey bought from our local shop and our Yogurts come from Newton Stewart, 25 miles away, all helping reduce our “food miles”. By asking guests to choose their breakfast each evening means that we produce very little food waste and what we do produce is either fed to our neighbours’ hens (from where we source our eggs), or is composted for use in the garden and greenhouse. A water butt has been installed in the garden to collect rain water for use in the garden and greenhouse.

Despite being based in a region which has yet to introduce a multi-bin waste disposal programme, we endeavour to reuse and recycle paper, tin foil and some glass. Plastic bottle tops go to the local school for the art class!

We have maps and guides to hopefully encourage you to walk and/or use public transport, although we recognise the limited nature of the local services. However, our situation is ideal for walking or cycling from the house and leaving your car behind for the day. We offer free, secure bicycle storage and have drying and laundry services too.

Maybe you could help us maintain and improve our environmental goals. On the way out in the evening and morning, turn off the TV and bedroom lights, check taps are not dripping and all chargers are unplugged. A copy of Our Visitor Charter is in each room and gives you useful hints and tips that really do help us. We also welcome any suggestions and comments that will support us.
