The Arts in Galloway

Dumfries and Galloway has been chosen by some of the country's finest artists as home because of the unique blend of light and untamed landscape. These artists, such as E.A.Hornel  and The Glasgow Boys were inspired by their surroundings to create some of the most famous works the art world has seen.

Even today many members of the creative arts continue to come to work in the area particularly along the solway coast and have settled in towns like Kirkcudbright which has become known as 'The Artists' Town.

History & Heritage of Galloway

Dumfries and Galloway is steeped in history; not all of it good. For many centuries the area was ruled by powerful, warlike families or clans who fought between themselves and anyone else who challenged their rule.

This led to Galloway, in particular, to become a hotbed of dissent in the period called 'the Killing Times' when local Covenanters stood against the will of the Crown, and suffered terrible retribution.

The results can still be seen today in the kirkyards of many of the small villages in the area, where victims of this time are buried and commemorated.
